Karwar : Uttara Kannada Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer Ishwar Kandoo has recently visited a coastal village Kasarkod in Honnavar Taluk and witnessed the Fish Farming activities in Sharavati River.
After witnessing the activity Kandoo said that Uttara Kannada district has a coastal area from the border of Goa state to the border of Udupi district and the demand for fish farming is high. In the district, fish farming is already being done under the leadership of men in many places, and this is the first time that cage farming of “Giant Sea Perch” fish farming activity has been started under the leadership of women of the Self Help Groups. The process of fish farming is very easy and profitable, therefore he appealed the fisherwomen Self Help Groups to take advantage of such government schemes and come into the mainstream of society with financial and social strength, he added.
At the confluence of Arabian Sea and Sharavati backwater, cage farming activity of “Giant Sea Perch”, is being conducted by women self-help group. They have constructed a 20 feet long, 10 feet wide and 10 feet deep cage using wire mesh, GI pipe, empty barrels at an estimated cost of Rs 1.25 lakh. This cage is floating in water and ideal for fish farming.
