Weights and Measures Inspector Raided local ‘More’ Super Market Outlets

Karwar : A big relief for consumers of local ‘More’ Super Market outlets. Consumers had brought to the notice of “Karwar Mirror” about ‘over billing’ and MRP violations at local ‘More’ Super Market.
“Karwar Mirror” had published the news in 13th February Issue.
The local ‘Weights and Measures” Dept., acted swiftly and their Inspector N Narasaiah conducted raid at both the outlets of ‘More’ Super Market and checked rates of all the products and billing.
The raid was conducted under the guidence of the Assistant Controller, Department of Legal Metrology Ramachandra Sharma. Office Assistant Nagaraj assisted the raid.
The nomenclature of “the Department of Weights and Measures” is changed as “The Department of Legal Metrology”, as notified by the Government on issuing the Notification. As the name suggests, the Department of Legal Metrology, relates to the units of weights and measures, methods of measurements and measuring instruments and the regulatory safeguards to the public. The Department of Legal Metrology is one of the important organs of Consumers’ Protection. It has an important role to play in providing the Citizen with friendly Administration of Services. It is concerned with technical and statutory requirements to safeguard the Public Interest from the point of view of security and accuracy of weights, measures, etc.

There has been lot of over billings at More Super Market outlet at Dr. Pikle Road here. But, now a same product purchased at their two local outlets, one at Dr. Pikle Road and another at Kajubag, Rs.6/- more has been over billed at Dr. Pikle Road outlet. The consumer complained with Bills and Proofs to “Karwar Mirror” and when “Karwar Mirror” visited their outlet it was found that though there is MRP printed on the product, the billing staff scans the ‘Bar-code’ and then selects random price popped-up from a ‘Menu’.
‘MRP is inclusive of GST, consumers can’t be charged more’ Consumer activists say. MRP (Maximum retail price) is always inclusive of all taxes and the seller can never collect more than MRP printed on the product.
The consumer purchased Saffola Gold. MRP of which is printed on the packet as Rs.199/- but Rs.205/- was billed. When the same consumer purchased same product at their Kajubag outlet, they billed Rs.199/- as per the MRP. It was alleged that the staffers are over billing seeing the customer viz; old women and uneducated.
Consumer activists demand that the ‘More’ higher authorities should intervene in this serious matter and set right billing system and they have to undertake publicly that such over billing mistakes will not be repeated in future. The activists further said that if the ‘More’ higher authorities are not correcting their mistake they have to face in Consumer Court. The matter has also been brought to the notice of local representative of Consumer Court.
